What is a LUT and what is it used for?
A LUT (Look-Up Table) is a file that transforms the colors in your video according to a predefined formula. In simple terms: it's a "professional filter" that applies the type of color grading a colorist would achieve manually, with a single click. They are used to give a cinematic look, to match footage from different cameras, or simply to speed up the color workflow in a project.
There are two main types: technical LUTs (which convert a camera profile like Log to Rec.709) and creative LUTs (which apply an artistic look). A good pack combines both.
How to install and apply LUTs in DaVinci Resolve
DaVinci Resolve is the most widely used color software in the world, and applying LUTs is straightforward:
- Open DaVinci Resolve → Preferences → LUTs location and copy the .cube files to that folder.
- Restart Resolve for it to detect them.
- On the Color page, right-click on a clip → 3D LUTs → choose yours.
- Adjust the intensity with a node if the effect is too strong.
How to apply LUTs in Premiere Pro
In Premiere, the process is just as simple:
- Select the clip and open the Lumetri Color panel.
- In Basic Correction → Input LUT, choose Browse and select the .cube file.
- Or use the Creative → Look section for style LUTs, with intensity control included.
Common mistakes when using LUTs
- Applying a creative LUT to uncorrected Log footage: the result looks washed out. Correct exposure and white balance first.
- Always using the LUT at 100%: lowering the intensity often gives a more natural look.
- Mixing LUTs from different cameras: each camera profile needs its corresponding technical LUT.
